Sutro Biopharma

In her role as VP, Supply Chain at Sutro, Heidi directs a network of CMOs that make up the complex supply chain for manufacturing protein therapeutics and ADCs produced using Sutro’s proprietary cell-free protein expression system. In close to 30 years in the biotechnology industry, she has experienced a plethora of challenges and successes with process development, technology transfer, and manufacturing of biologics, including vaccines, gene therapies, and protein therapeutics.

Heidi has solid roots in the vaccine industry, first from Aviron, where she developed and implemented production processes for vaccines against EBV, PIV, and influenza (FluMist®), and later as part of VaxGen, where she was responsible for process development and manufacturing of anthrax vaccine.  She learned the gene therapy space at Valentis, where she led the team responsible for process development, technology transfer, and clinical production of plasmid DNA. Her late-stage experience in protein therapeutics came from a technology transfer role, hiring and leading the VaxGen oversight team for the successful transfer of commercial production of Bristol-Meyer Squibb’s Orencia® (abatacept) into the Celltrion manufacturing facility in South Korea. Heidi also enjoyed being part of non-profit organization Global Solutions for Infectious Diseases (GSID) as Project Director responsible for coordinating the outsourcing of process development and manufacture of HIV vaccines.

Heidi holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Virginia Tech, and a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology from University of California, Berkeley where she studied under Dr. Harrison Echols.
